Track 1: Holistic Health

Holistic medicine is a form of healing that considers the whole person body, mind, spirit, and emotions in the quest for optimal health and wellness. In this way, if people have imbalances (physical, emotional, or spiritual) in their lives, it can negatively affect their overall health.

Track 2: African psychology

African psychology is ultimately concerned with understanding the systems of meaning of human Beingness, the features of human functioning, and the restoration of normal/natural order to human development. As such, it is used to resolve personal and social problems and to promote optimal functioning

Track 3: Mind Body Therapy

Mind-body practices are techniques designed to enhance the mind's positive impact on the body. These techniques practices include behavioral, psychological, social, expressive, and spiritual approaches. Awareness of the mind-body connection is certainly not a new idea, but it may feel unfamiliar to some in the West, where the mind and body has been traditionally viewed as distinct entities for several centuries. However, this view is rapidly changing as researchers scientifically prove the complex links between the mind and body.

Track 4: Psychology and Mental Health Care

Psychology is the scientific study of the mind and behavior.  Psychology is a multifaceted discipline and includes many sub-fields of study such areas as human development, sports, health, clinical, social behavior and cognitive processes. Psychology is really a very new science, with most advances happening over the past 150 years or so.  However, its origins can be traced back to ancient . The emphasis was a philosophical one, with great thinkers such as Socrates influencing Plato.Mental health can affect daily life, relationships, and even physical health. Mental health also includes a person's ability to enjoy life - to attain a balance between life activities and efforts to achieve psychological resilience.

Track 5: Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy is a general term for treating mental health problems by talking with a psychiatrist, psychologist or other mental health provider During psychotherapy, you learn about your condition and your moods, feelings, thoughts and behaviors. Psychotherapy helps you learn how to take control of your life and respond to challenging situations with healthy coping skills. There are many types of psychotherapy, each with its own approach. The type of psychotherapy that's right for you depends on your individual situation. Psychotherapy is also known as talk therapy, counseling, psychosocial therapy or, simply, therapy.

Track 6: Psychiatry Counselling

Psychiatry and psychology are overlapping professions. Practitioners in both -- psychiatrists and psychologists -- are mental health professionals. Their area of expertise is the mind -- and the way it affects behavior and well-being. They often work together to prevent, diagnose, and treat mental illness. And both are committed to helping people stay mentally well. But there are differences between psychiatry and psychology. And people sometimes find those differences confusing, especially when they are looking for help. To make matters even more confusing, psychiatrists and psychologists aren't the only mental health professionals you can choose from. There are mental health counselors, social workers, nurses and nurse practitioners, and others who deal with issues of mental health. And if you consider the multiple approaches to treatment, ranging from counseling to various forms of psychotherapy, the whole mental health system begins to look like a maze that's nearly impossible to navigate.

Track 7:  Autism spectrum disorder

Autism spectrum disorder  (ASD) is a developmental disorder that affects communication and behavior. Although autism can be diagnosed at any age, it is said to be a “developmental disorder” because symptoms generally appear in the first two years of life. According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-), a guide created by the American Psychiatric Association used to diagnose mental disorders, people with ASD have: Difficulty with communication and interaction with other people, Restricted interests and repetitive behaviors Symptoms that hurt the person’s ability to function properly in school, work, and other areas of life. Autism is known as a “spectrum” disorder because there is wide variation in the type and severity of symptoms people experience. ASD occurs in all ethnic, racial, and economic groups. Although ASD can be a lifelong disorder, treatments and services can improve a person’s symptoms and ability to function. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that all children be screened for autism. All caregivers should talk to their doctor about ASD screening or evaluation.

Track 8:  Naturopathic Medicine

Naturopathic Medicine is a distinct primary health care profession that combines the wisdom of nature with the rigors of modern science. Naturopathic physicians are trained as primary care providers who diagnose, treat and manage patients with acute and chronic conditions, while addressing disease and dysfunction at the level of body, mind and spirit. They concentrate on whole patient wellness through health promotion and disease prevention, attempting to find the underlying cause of the patient’s condition. Naturopathic physicians care for patients of all ages and genders. They provide individualized evidence-informed therapies that balance the least harmful and most effective approaches to help facilitate the body’s inherent ability to restore and maintain optimal health.

Track 9: Nursing in Health Care

Nursing offers a wide range of career opportunities—from entry-level practitioner to doctoral-level researcher. Nurses are hands-on health professionals who provide focused and highly personalized care. They are also in demand—employment of registered nurses is projected to grow 16% from 2014 to 2024, much faster than the average for all occupations, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Nurses promote health, prevent disease and help patients cope with illness. They have a unique scope of practice and can practice independently, although they also collaborate with all members of the health care team to provide the care needed by each patient as an individual. Nurses advocate for their patients and patients’ families. They develop and manage nursing care plans and instruct patients and their families in proper care. As educators, they help whole communities by teaching individuals and groups how to take steps to improve or maintain their health.

Track 10: Occupational health

Occupational health deals with all aspects of health and safety in the workplace and has a strong focus on primary prevention of hazards. The health of the workers has several determinants, including risk factors at the workplace leading to cancers, accidents, musculoskeletal diseases, respiratory diseases, hearing loss, circulatory diseases, stress related disorders and communicable diseases and others. Employment and working conditions in the formal or informal economy embrace other important determinants, including, working hours, salary, workplace policies concerning maternity leave, health promotion and protection provisions, etc.

Track 11: Acupuncture & Acupuncture Treatments

Acupuncture involves the insertion of very thin needles through your skin at strategic points on your body. A key component of traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture is most commonly used to treat pain. Increasingly, it is being used for overall wellness, including stress management. Traditional Chinese medicine explains acupuncture as a technique for balancing the flow of energy or life force — known as chi or qi (chee) — believed to flow through pathways (meridians) in your body. By inserting needles into specific points along these meridians, acupuncture practitioners believe that your energy flow will re-balance. In contrast, many Western practitioners view the acupuncture points as places to stimulate nerves, muscles and connective tissue. Some believe that this stimulation boosts your body's natural painkillers.

Track 12: Advanced Health Care Transformation

In order to boost up the revenue and reduce the costs, Big data and Analytics are providing various insights to healthcare organizations. The analytics combine the traditional reporting data with web-based and unstructured extra-enterprise data so as to help payers from becoming the victim of medical fraud. Transformative changes have occurred in healthcare because of the roles played by nurses, their education and the respect they have earned. Social and disease-type demographics of change amomg citizens has also led to the advancement in health care. Many changes are needed in healthcare in order to meet the needs of people suffering from chronic diseases like cancer, Type 2 diabetes, stroke, etc

Track 13: Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

Traditional Chinese medicine is a healing approach that originated in China thousands of years ago. Often referred to as "TCM," practitioners use herbs, diet, acupuncture, cupping, and qigong to prevent or treat health problems. Although it is still practiced in many of China's medical facilities alongside modern medicine, in the United States, traditional Chinese medicine is considered a form of alternative medicine. Health Benefits To date, Western scientists have not extensively studied the use of traditional Chinese medicine in the treatment of specific health conditions. However, traditional Chinese medicine is used to address the following conditions: Allergies, Anxiety, Arthritis (e.g. rheumatoid arthritis), Back pain, Depression, Diabetes, Eczema, hives, acne, psoriasis, and other skin conditions, Fertility, High blood pressure, Insomnia, Menopause symptoms, Obesity, Parkinson's disease Although standard treatment in modern medicine is based on the diagnosis, in TCM, the treatment would depend on the underlying imbalance. For example, a person with insomnia may have difficulty sleeping because of an imbalance such as a kidney yin deficiency, spleen qi deficiency, or blood deficiency.

Track 14: Ayurveda

Ayurveda is considered by many scholars to be the oldest healing science. In Sanskrit, Ayurveda means “The Science of Life.” Ayurvedic knowledge originated in India more than 5,000 years ago and is often called the “Mother of All Healing.” It stems from the ancient Vedic culture and was taught for many thousands of years in an oral tradition from accomplished masters to their disciples. Some of this knowledge was set to print a few thousand years ago, but much of it is inaccessible. The principles of many of the natural healing systems now familiar in the West have their roots in Ayurveda, including Homeopathy and Polarity Therapy.

Track 14: Metaphysical Science

Areas of metaphysical studies include ontology, cosmology, and often, epistemology. Metaphysical - Longer definition: Metaphysics is a type of philosophy or study that uses broad concepts to help define reality and our understanding of it.

The current findings of National Health Service state the current condition of junior doctors and nurses in the hospitals. They created the data by asking at least 1500 doctors about their experience of delivering care to the patients in the stressed conditions.

According to data

64% doctors believe that patient safety has declined over the past year – 10% higher than last year

93% experienced shortfall in staff– 9% higher than last year

84% thinks that the workforce is demoralised – 2% higher than last year

85% cite rising demand for their service over the past year – 7% higher than last year

47% cite lower quality care over the past year – 10% higher than last year

Following points depicts the reason that why more medical errors are likely to occur.

  • 56% of doctors undertaking research do not have protected time for it
  • 54% of doctors undertaking leadership do not have protected time for it
  • 45% of doctors undertaking education and training do not have protected time for it.

The South Africa healthcare market

The healthcare industry experienced significant growth over the past years, especially in medical spas. According to Euromonitor International, the forecast for the UAE spa market was USD 411 million in 2015. The Global Wellness Institute showed  that the Middle East and North African region is the second most rapidly growing spa market in the world.

Scope and Importance:-

Conferences pertaining to nursing allow nurses to participate in an area of career and education growth that is not easily found within the structure of the workplace. Joining such conference gives an opportunity to meet eminent people and learn the latest clinical information.

As the diversity is growing in population so renewed efforts are required to develop interventions that address cultural differences. Moreover, there are different demands for practice, research, and education based on geographic locations—mainly in rural and urban settings.

Changes are required in all the 3 aspects i.e practice, research and education. In practice, innovative, designed, evidence-based models of care for registered nurses and advanced practice registered nurses who have the knowledge, leadership, and team skills to improve quality and address system change. In research, data can provide a starting base for clinical practice and expand our knowledge base in symptom science, wellness, self-management, and end-of-life as well as behavioral health, to demonstrate the value of nursing care and reduce health disparities. Hence, there is an urgent need to bring the research into practice and promote health care.

  • Why Cape Town?

Speciality of Cape Town

The Western Cape health system is failing the people who rely on it. People dread to attend overcrowded and under-resourced clinics. They wait for hours or days to be seen by a nurse or doctor. Sometimes without any privacy from others waiting. People without appointments are turned away. Pregnant women are shouted at to stop pushing while in labour, causing long term health complications or the death of their babies. State of the art hospitals look impressive on the outside, yet on the inside patients lie without dignity on the floor. Overstretched nurses get security guards to give out patient files. Ambulances are delayed, too afraid to respond without police presence, or they never arrive at all. This is the reality facing people who depend on free health services in the Western Cape. 20 years ago, the first TAC branch was born in Khayelitsha. We began campaigning to ensure access to HIV treatment for all. Today, TAC Western Cape continues to fight for the rights of the poor and marginalised. Now as well as people living with HIV and TB, we represent all people who use the public healthcare system. We campaign on critical issues related to the quality of and access to healthcare. There are now 36 branches across the province in Cape Town Metro, Eden, Overberg, and West Coast. Through these branches we monitor service delivery at a number of clinics and hospitals. Our members are the people who need the public health system to work, so they are the first to notice when it does not. The data collected by our branches corresponds to the worrying picture of our public healthcare system painted by reports published last year by the OHSC1 . According to the OHSC report, facilities should score at least 80% to claim an acceptable level of care – yet in the Western Cape of 65 clinics inspected by the OHSC (not necessarily the same facilities as monitored by TAC) only 22% of the clinics are performing at 50% or above, only 4% of the clinics at 60% and above, and none above 70%:.
